SCHOOL OF MEDIEVAL MUSIC
AND OF ORAL TRADITION 2025-2026
The school of medieval music and of oral tradition celebra la undécima edición de sus cursos. Abrió sus puertas en el curso 2016-2017, para que músicos profesionales y aficionados, niños y familias, tengan la oportunidad de conocer y cantar la música de los siglos IX al XV y de nuestra tradición oral.
The School applies the practical model and essentially oral learning of the music used in the Middle Ages and still to this day, in the traditional music (hence the importance it gives to the examples still alive music of oral tradition from around the world). It acts to restore the singing and melodic improvisation and polyphony as fundamental tools of learning. So, you start singing and later, taught the theory and musical notations of different eras.
La Escuela de Música Medieval y de Tradición Oral está dirigida por Paloma Gutiérrez del Arroyo (www.palomagutierrezdelarroyo.com), cantante especializada en las músicas de la Edad Media y en la enseñanza teórica y práctica de las mismas, que asegura los cursos anuales de especialización y de introducción. Este año volverá a contar con la participación de grandes especialistas de las músicas medieval y de tradición oral: Catherine Schroeder, Benjamin Bagby y Jota Martínez (para actividades de construcción de instrumentos en familia de fin de semana), Ana Arnaz, para trabajar polifonías de tradición oral de la península ibérica, y Gülseven Medar, gran especialista del canto turco.
This School forms part of the educational project of the Institucion Libre de Enseñanza, focused on knowledge transfer and teaching investigation which gives huge importance to cultured, folkloric music, related from their roots with the investigation of medieval lyrical poetry and traditional music.
WHO IS IT FOR: Las enseñanzas de la Escuela están dirigidas, según el curso, a profesionales y aficionados de la música; a estudiantes de conservatorio (grados Elemental a Superior) y de Musicología, Filologías, Arte, Historia, Matemáticas, Física, etc. (Licenciatura y Máster); a aficionados y profesionales de la música; a maestros y profesores de música; a personas atraídas por las sonoridades de la música medieval y, además, a niños, músicos o no, e incluso, a familias.

Annual fee of enrollment to the School of Medieval Music and the Oral Tradition: 15 euros. Reduced fee for children under 25 years: 7,50 euros. Fee given to students of the UNIVERSITY.
25% discount for unemployed people and members of the Corporation of Alumni and Friends of the ILE.
We offer three scholarships of 50% in one of the annual courses to students of the UNIVERSITY, selected according to the criteria of the School (attach a CV and letter of motivation).
